The Adventures of RABA
Gellie (Physil's Familiar)
Familiar: Faerie Dragon
Speed: 4, fly 6 (hover)
- Arcane Sensitivity: You gain a +4 bonus to Arcane checks made to sense or detect things.
Fey Trance: Rather than sleep, you enter a meditative state known as Trance. You need to spend 4 hours in this state to gain the same benefits others gain from taking a 6-hour extended rest. While in a trance, you are fully aware of your surroundings, and you notice approaching enemies and other events as normal.
- Fairie Glamour: As a minor action, you can choose to cloak a Faerie Dragon familiar in it’s natural illusions, making it invisible till the end of your next turn.
Attacks: A familiar can’t attack, nor flank.
Defenses: A familiar uses the player’s (in this case Physil’s) defenses. Familiars are also immune to it’s master’s attacks. The player may choose to ignore this benefit however.
Skills and Checks: A familiar uses the player’s (again, Physil’s) bonuses for all skill and ability checks.
Hit Points: a familiar has 1 hit point, but a missed attack never damages it.
Destruction of a familiar: If the familiar is reduced to 0 hit points or fewer, it is destroyed temporarily. After the player’s next short or extended rest, it re-forms in passive mode at the player’s location.
Switching Modes: Going from passive to active mode, or vice-versa, is a minor action for it’s Player.
Passive: A passive familiar is sharing the space of it’s Player. While in this mode it cannot be targeted by any effect nor damaged by any effect.
Active: In it’s active mode, a familiar is separate from the player, and takes up the space of a Tiny creature. It’s player can move it using a move action. A familiar cannot move more than 20 squares from it’s player however. If, at the end of the players turn, for whatever reason, there are more than 20 squares between player and familiar, the familiar disperses and reappears in passive mode at the player. A familiar can use skills or take actions as normal, but doing so requires the player to concentrate, and use the relevant actions on their turn.
During some down-time in the town of Fallcrest, Physil decided he ought to learn more about the more ordered, more common magics. He found a tutor (Nimrozan the Green) who would teach him how to perform arcane rituals, such as the one they had found in the hands of the goblins which created a portal.
However, he found it extremely difficult to grasp. His attempts most often fizzled, or turned out oddly and unpredictable. For several weeks he struggled to to suppress the chaotic elements of his powers, using exercises his teacher said would allow him to use his will to more stably control the arcane energy. But one day, while straining especially hard at mentally pushing away the flux and flow of his natural powers, he found a strange animal coalescing before him. Without knowing how, he had manifested a familiar.
While not his original intent, he found this to be FAR more enjoyable, and so abandoned the attempt to learn ritual magic in favor of perfecting this new aspect of his innate energies.
Now, Gellie as he has named her, is an arcane construct in the form of an immature Faerie Dragon (a much smaller relative of the more common dragons, sporting butterfly-like wings, bright colors and a quixotic attitude). When passive, she becomes something more like a tattoo on Physil’s face, curling from one temple, down his cheek, and ending on his neck. The pose varies, but is generally in the same area.
When called forth, the image springs from Physil’s skin, becoming three dimensional and quite solid.
